Preservation Through Education
The mission of the Mosby Heritage Area Association is to educate about the history and advocate for the preservation of the extraordinary historic, cultural and scenic resources in the Northern Virginia Piedmont.Virginia Map

The Mosby Heritage Area covers approximately 1,800 square miles in Virginia about one hour west of Washington DC. The area is bound by the Bull Run Mountains to the east, the Blue Ridge Mountains to the west, the Potomac River to the north and the Rappahannock River to the South.

The Mosby Heritage Area Association is a 501(c)3 organization with more than 1000 members and a board of volunteers. All our educational programs and events are financed with membership fees and donations. If you believe in what we do, please become a member or make a tax-deductible donation today!

The Mosby Heritage Area
John Singleton MosbyThe Area is named for the famed Confederate Cavalry officer John S. Mosby whose rangers fought here during the Civil War. The Mosby Heritage Area includes the counties of Loudoun, Fauquier, Clarke, Warren and part of Prince William, known as Mosby's Confederacy.
The Civil War will always be an important part of our history. This area was hard hit by the war, and our mission is to study and teach its history, not to romanticize it. Our annual Civil War Conference, with the nation's top scholars in the field, is trying to do just that. After the war Mosby served as a U.S. Consul to Hong Kong under Presidents Hayes, Garfield and Arthur, and in the Interior and Justice Departments under Presidents McKinley, Roosevelt, and Taft.

A Call to Action
Preservation. Our mission is to educate about the history and advocate for the preservation of this part of Northern Virginia, remarkable not only for its history and natural beauty, but also because it retains so much of the landscape and landmarks of three centuries of our past. We have Native American, colonial and Civil War historic sites. We can travel land George Washington surveyed, visit quaint villages and small towns, see farms and open spaces as well as the grand homes of Chief Justice Marshall, President Monroe, the Carters and the Lees.
Programs. We offer a wide range of programs and services, including Classroom Programs for 4th Grade Virginia Studies and 11th Grade U.S. History. We reach more than 4,000 students every year. We offer family oriented interpretive programs, field trips, a lecture series and an annual Civil War Conference. We also provide speakers to groups interested in Virginia history.

Plan A Visit. Let us help you explore the Mosy Heritage Area with our Driving Tours and Maps, Audio CD Tours, Scavenger Hunts and informational brochures.

Ride With Mosby. In this region of history and beauty you find centuries-old settlements of villages and farms, stone houses and stately dwellings, stone walls and mills. It is still recognizably the landscape where Mosby and his rangers rode about 150 years ago.
